My name is Rashaan Alexander. When I was 15 years old, my kidneys began to fail. For the past 20 years, I have suffered from end stage renal disease. I am currently on dialysis (again) and need a kidney transplant, unfortunately I am not alone. Presently there are over 350,000 people on dialysis because their kidneys no longer work. About a quarter of those patients are currently waiting for a kidney transplant, but due to a lack of donors the average wait time is between 2 – 5 years. The average number of kidney transplants the past few years has been around 16,000; there are just not enough donations to meet the demand.
The goal of this website is to change that by increasing organ donation awareness. Over the next few weeks, I will provide information about kidney donation, why you should donate, how to donate, and hopefully much more. I will also share with you my personal journey dealing with this disease and hope you will share your experience with me.
Finally, I am asking for donations thru gofundme.com to get the website started. Your donations will help pay for the website design, advertising, mailing, and other expenses related to spreading the word about the benefits of organ donation. I believe that together we can increase kidney donation by educating people about the importance of being a donor.
